TTR, the leading supplier of tax answers, announced today that it has added new automotive services content to its online sales and use tax library. This new content addresses items an Auto Repair & Paint Shop buy to perform their services.

Accurately applying tax to auto repair shop purchases and sales is time-consuming and often difficult. For example, many states exempt items that go on a car and leave the shop with the customer. This usually means paint is exempt but things like degreaser and rags are not. TTR's new library answers these challenging and often confusing tax questions.

TTR researched 32 items most commonly purchased by auto repair shops and accurately determined their tax across all states. The Automotive Service Library contains tax answers to items such as:

  • Paint
  • Welding supplies
  • Knee pads
  • Cloths and rags
  • Stencils, etc.

"One of the things I love most about TTR is how much we care about finding and simplifying areas of confusion. One such area of confusion is how service providers, like auto repair shops, pay tax. If they are considered "consumers" of their purchased repair materials, they are required to pay tax on their purchases. If not, they can often purchase repair materials tax-free for resale. Since some states differ on this point it was important for us to sort it out for our subscribers." - Ken Webster, TTR's Head of Research.
