Washington's sales and use tax exemption for some solar energy systems ends September 30, 2017.

Currently, Washington exempts sales of machinery and equipment used directly in generating electricity using solar energy. The exemption also applies to charges for labor and services to install the machinery and equipment. Beginning September 30, 2017, the exemption no longer applies to solar energy systems capable of generating 500 kilowatts or less.

Note that solar energy systems capable of generating more than 500 kilowatts of electricity are still eligible for a 75% refund of the sales tax paid until January 1, 2020.
