The Illinois Department of Revenue ("DOR") ruled that hotel tax applied when a man rented out his spare bedroom through the Internet.

The man rented his spare bedroom to guests using a web-based community marketplace. The marketplace allows people to list and rent rooms. He also allowed the guests to use the kitchen. The guests stayed for less than 30 days.

The DOR concluded that Illinois hotel tax applied to the room rental because the man charged for the use of a room and its furnishings.
