The Rhode Island Department of Revenue (DOR) issued guidance on the taxability of short-term residential rentals, which became taxable on July 1, 2015.

The publication explains what rentals the tax applies to and that anyone subject to the tax must register with the DOR's Division of Taxation, pay the tax permit fee, and collect and remit the applicable tax. Additionally, it states that if a rental agreement was signed before July 1, 2015 for the rental of property after that date, no tax applies to the rental as long as it occurs in 2015
