Governor Nathan Deal of Georgia recently approved a law that will exempt sales of consumable supplies used in manufacturing. The law will take effect on July 1, 2014.

Georgia exempts sales of machinery and equipment that is required for and used in manufacturing. Currently, the definition of "equipment" excludes consumable supplies. The exemption therefore does not apply to consumable supplies. "Consumable supplies" means tangible personal property consumed or expended during manufacturing.

The new law will no longer exclude consumable supplies from the definition of "equipment." Starting July 1, 2014, consumable supplies may be exempt as "equipment" used in manufacturing if they meet the other exemption requirements.
