The Mississippi legislature recently passed a law exempting guided river tours from sales tax. The law will take effect on July 1, 2014.

Mississippi's sales tax applies to admissions to amusements. The new law will exempt admissions to guided tours on navigable waters in Mississippi if the purpose of the tour is outdoor tourism. This exemption will extend to accommodations and guide services for these tours. Charges for providing equipment will also be exempt if the tour guide will direct the operation of that equipment on the tour. The exemption will not apply to the sale of tangible personal property by the tour provider.
