The Colorado Department of Revenue recently issued a reminder to taxpayers that sales made by Colorado public and private schools and school groups are exempt from state sales tax. Colorado Tax Information Blog (Dept. of Revenue Aug. 20, 2012). All proceeds derived from the sale must benefit the school or school-approved student organization in order to qualify for the exemption. Proceeds from sales made by public school parent/teacher organizations can be used for the reasonable expenses of the organization and still qualify for the exemption. Preschools, trade schools, and post-secondary schools are not eligible for this sales tax exemption. For more information, please see Colo. Tax FYI Publication: Sales 86 (Dept. of Revenue Jan. 2012).
