California Board of Equalization Releases List of Top 500 Tax Delinquencies

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) recently released its list of the top 500 tax delinquent individuals and businesses for the first quarter of 2012 (California SBE News Release 22-12-H (Mar. 2, 2012)). The list, which has been expanded from 250 to 500, is released in order to encourage delinquent taxpayers to pay back the state any delinquent taxes they owe. The list accounts for approximately $555.7 million in tax delinquencies for the state of California. Taxpayers who appear on the list are notified no less than 30 days prior to the release of the list to the public. Beginning July 1, 2012, state agencies that issue licenses, certificates, registrations, or permits will be required to suspend, revoke, and refuse to issue a license to those whose name appears on the Top 500 list. All state licensing agencies will be required to provide the taxpayer with 90 days notice prior to suspending, revoking, or withholding issuance or renewal of a license. Once the taxpayer pays their delinquencies, the BOE will remove the taxpayer''s name from the list.
