The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration recently ruled that visual inspection and tag changing services performed on portable fire extinguishers is not taxable.

The inspection technician took the fire extinguishers out of the cabinets or off hooks and visually inspected them to make sure they were in proper working order. The technician also changed the inspection tags on the extinguishers to certify that they were in proper working order.

Arkansas taxes the services of initial installation, addition, cleaning, refinishing, replacement, and repair of machinery of all kinds. However, the Department ruled that inspection and retagging of fire extinguishers was not one of these taxable services.
