Effective October 1, 2020, Virginia is imposing a peer-to-peer vehicle tax on peer-to-peer vehicle sharing platforms. "Peer-to-peer vehicle sharing" is the authorized use of a shared vehicle through a peer-to-peer vehicle sharing platform. For peer-to-peer vehicle owners that list no more than ten different vehicles on any combination of vehicle sharing platforms at any one time, the tax will be levied at a rate of 6.5% of the gross proceeds collected from the shared vehicle driver. The rate will increase to 7% effective July 1, 2021. The rate will be 10% for those listing more than ten different shared vehicles on any combination of vehicle sharing platforms at any one time.
