Textbooks Exempt in New York

Jan 20th, 2017

New York recently reminded students that they can buy certain textbooks exempt.

New York, along with several other states, exempts textbooks from sales tax. New York's exemption is available to students enrolled at any institution of higher education. It applies to required or recommended textbooks for college courses.

Purchases may be from any bookstore, including online bookstores. A student must have valid student identification and an exemption certificate to buy books exempt. If the bookstore already has a list of eligible textbooks, the student does not need an exemption certificate.
