Sales Tax Holiday for Energy Star Products in Texas

The Texas Comptroller is reminding all taxpayers that purchases of qualifying Energy Star products will be exempt from tax beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2012 and ending at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 28, 2012. Products that qualify for the exemption include:

  • Air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less;
  • Clothes washers (but not clothes dryers);
  • Ceiling fans;
  • Dehumidifiers;
  • Dishwashers;
  • Light bulbs;
  • Programmable thermostats;
  • Refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less.

Products qualifying for the exemption must display the Energy Star logo on the appliance itself, the packaging or the Energy Guide label. There is no limit on the number of items that may be purchased during the sales tax holiday. Additionally, Energy Star items purchased over the internet or through a catalog will also qualify for the exemption. Items purchased through a retailer's layaway program may also qualify for the sales tax holiday, within certain parameters.
