Massachusetts Clarifies when Purchases are Eligible for The Sales Tax Holiday

Sep 2nd, 2020

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue recently published a technical information letter clarifying when purchases are eligible for the sales tax holiday. Massachusetts generally has a one-time sales tax holiday each year. Prior to 2020, a taxpayer's practice of accepting payment before the holiday and rewriting the sale during the holiday made the sale eligible for the sales tax holiday exemption. However, for the sales tax holiday held in 2020, and for future holidays, a sale is ineligible for the sales tax holiday exemption if a deposit, prepayment, or binding promise to pay is made before the holiday.
