Florida Clarifies the Taxability of Boat Purchases

Oct 7th, 2020

The Florida Department of Revenue recently published guidance on the taxability of purchasing or bringing a boat into the state. All boats sold, delivered, used, or stored in Florida are taxable. When a boat is brought into the state, use tax applies when (1) the boat is purchased from a person who is not a registered boat dealer, and the sale or delivery occurs in the state, (2) the boat is purchased in another state and brought into Florida within six months of the purchase date, or (3) the boat is purchased in a foreign country and brought Florida. Note that the purchase of a boat is exempt when it is sold to a nonresident of Florida and the buyer is a nonresident at the time of delivery.
